Global Entry Program

What is Global Entry?

Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Though intended for frequent international travelers, there is no minimum number of trips necessary to qualify for the program. Participants may enter the United States by using automated kiosks located at select airports.

Travelers must be pre-approved for the Global Entry program. All applicants undergo a rigorous background check and interview before enrollment. Global Entry is open to U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, Dutch citizens, and Mexican nationals. As a pre-screened Global Entry member, you arrive in the United States, check-in at the Global Entry kiosk – and you’re on your way.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Fill out an online application and pay the $100 non-refundable application fee.  Once your application is reviewed, you will receive a message in your GOES account instructing you to schedule an interview at one of the Global Entry Enrollment Centers.  The interview will screen you for criminal and other security issues.  Once CBP approves your petition, you can use your pass for five years.

IS GLOBAL ENTRY VALUABLE?

If you travel internationally at least once per year and can qualify for this, Global Entry is worth the price of admission. I last traveled internationally in May of this year.  I did not have the Global Entry pass.  In Customs, I waited a good 45 minutes to pass through Inspections.  With Global Entry, I would have been through that line in five minutes.

AMERICAN EXPRESS WILL CREDIT YOUR GLOBAL ENTRY FILING FEES

In an  added benefit, if you upgrade to or obtain the Platinum Card from American Express, American Express will reimburse your filing fees for the Global Entry Program.  Simply use your Platinum Card to pay the government filing fees online.  The Platinum American Express has a direct link to the application as well.  Click here for further details:

COMPARISON TO THE EU SYSTEM

My understanding of EU entrants is that EU citizens scan their passports in, submit a retinal scan and gain entrance at airports.  My understanding is that EU citizens do not have to go through an application process to have this benefit.  So, the EU system appears more advanced than Global Entry.  However, Global Entry definitely represents progress and we should celebrate that!
