The U.S. Department of State has announced that it is conducting a limited pilot program allowing U.S. citizens to apply online for a U.S. passport card.
To be eligible for the pilot, you must:
- Be 16 years of age or older
- Have a valid, 10 year U.S. passport book
- Have at least 12 months of validity remaining on your passport book before expiration
- Have a U.S. or Canadian mailing address
- Have an e-mail address
The pilot will last 90 days (January 24-April 22) or until the State Department receives 20,000 applications, whichever comes first. At that time, the State Department will assess the merits of making the pilot a permanent option for the traveling public.
U.S. Citizens can use the U.S. Passport card at land-border crossings or sea ports-of-entry between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. U.S. Citizens cannot use the card for international air travel. SOURCE
